Building Confidence at Junctions
Junctions can be daunting at first, especially busy ones or those with poor visibility. But with practice, you’ll learn how to approach them with confidence and clarity.
There are different types of junctions—open, closed, T-junctions, crossroads, and staggered junctions. Each requires observation, planning, and good judgement.
Use the MSPSL routine again: Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, and Look. Slow down in good time, choose the right gear, and assess whether it’s safe to go. Always give way when required and don’t be pressured by other drivers.
Closed junctions (where your view is limited) require extra caution. You’ll often need to edge forward slowly, checking both directions before pulling out.
Top tip: If in doubt, wait it out. It’s better to pause a moment longer than to take a risk.
As your lessons progress, you’ll encounter a variety of junctions and build the skills needed to handle each one calmly and safely.
