Driving in Different Weather Conditions
UK weather is unpredictable, and part of learning to drive is gaining experience in different conditions—sunshine, rain, fog, and even the occasional bit of snow.
In wet weather, your stopping distances increase, and the road can become slippery. Always slow down and leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights when visibility drops.
Fog reduces visibility dramatically. Use your fog lights when appropriate, and reduce your speed. If you can’t see the car in front, you’re probably too close.
Bright sunlight can create glare. Keep your windscreen clean and use your sun visor. Wearing sunglasses can also help.
In icy or snowy conditions, take extra care. Driving may be limited or postponed if it’s unsafe, but it’s good to understand how to adjust your driving—gentle acceleration, early braking, and avoiding sudden movements are key.
You’ll learn to adjust your driving to suit the weather, and your instructor will only take you out when it’s safe to do so.
