However, because I teach exclusively in a fully electric vehicle (EV), I have a message for my current and future pupils: your lesson prices are staying exactly where they are.

Junctions feel pressured because you’re combining skills: mirrors, speed, positioning, and timing. Use a simple system and they become predictable.

Approach routine (mirrors, position, speed, look)

Check mirrors, position early, reduce speed smoothly, then look and decide. Rushing causes mistakes.

Turning left safely

Avoid cutting the corner. Watch for pedestrians crossing the side road you’re turning into.

Turning right safely

Keep your wheels straight when waiting. Watch oncoming traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Emerging and choosing safe gaps

A safe gap is one where you can join without forcing someone else to brake or change direction. If visibility is restricted, creep forward carefully and be prepared to stop again.

A First-Time Pass in Lichfield: How Isla Smashed Her Driving Test

There is no better way to start a Tuesday than with a first-time driving test pass! Huge congratulations to Isla, who “smashed” her test this morning in Lichfield on her very first attempt.

Isla’s journey was a little different from most. She was already an excellent driver, but when her previous instructor faced some personal challenges, I was more than happy to step in and help her get across the finish line. It felt a privilege to work with someone who was already so test-ready; my role was simply to add the finishing touches to her already high standard of driving.

Passing a driving test on the first go is a massive achievement, and it is a testament to the hard work and effort Isla and Lynn her original Driving Instructor put into every lesson.

It’s completely normal for the theory and practical tests to feel like huge hurdles, but with a solid plan, you can tackle them with confidence. Here is a quick guide to help you stay on track.

2. Practical Prep & Booking Rules

The way we manage tests has changed this year. As of Spring 2026, learners are now responsible for booking their own practical tests independently. You are also limited to only two changes per booking, so it’s vital to only book when we both agree you are truly ready.

Example: If you’re struggling with parallel parking, we’ll spend extra time on it during lessons rather than rushing to a test date. It’s better to move the test once than to lose the fee by failing or exceeding your change limit.

Before you change speed or direction: check mirrors, signal if it benefits others, then complete the manoeuvre safely. This keeps your driving predictable and reduces surprises.

When to check mirrors

Check mirrors before slowing down, stopping, turning, changing lanes, overtaking, passing parked cars, or approaching hazards. Quick glances are enough — don’t stare.

Blind spot checks (shoulder checks)

Mirrors don’t show everything. Before moving off, pulling out around parked cars, or changing lanes, you may need a quick shoulder check. This is especially important for cyclists and motorbikes.

Clear signalling

Signal to help others, not just because you “have to.” Signal early enough to be useful, but not so early it confuses people.

Steering and Road Position: Staying Safe Without Drifting

Steering looks easy when experienced drivers do it, but learners often drift, over-steer, or clip kerbs because they’re tense or looking too close.

Hand position and smooth steering

A comfortable hand position is around “9 and 3” on the wheel. Keep your grip light. Smooth steering comes from calm hands and the right speed. If you’re turning the wheel quickly, you’re usually going too fast.

Look further ahead

Where your eyes go, the car tends to follow. If you stare at the kerb, you’ll drift to it. Look further down the road and your steering will naturally become steadier.

Clearance from parked cars

Give a safe clearance when passing parked vehicles — ideally about a door’s width where possible. Watch for doors opening and pedestrians stepping out.

Bends and corner safety

Slow down before the bend, steer smoothly through, and accelerate gently on the exit if safe. Don’t cut corners — stay fully in your lane.

Moving Off and Stopping Smoothly: The First Real Driving Skill

Moving off and stopping sounds simple, but it’s one of the most important foundations in driving. If you can’t move off safely, you can’t join traffic. If you can’t stop smoothly, junctions and queues become stressful.

The safe move-off routine

Moving off is about control and observation. In an automatic, select Drive, keep your foot on the brake, and prepare to move using gentle pressure. Then check mirrors and do the right blind-spot check before you move away (your instructor will show you when).

If it helps other road users, signal. Then move away smoothly — no rushing.

Stopping smoothly (without jerky braking)

Smooth stops come from looking ahead and braking early. Use gentle pressure first, then ease off slightly at the end so the car settles. Think “soft landing,” not “slam on.”

Safe distance and stopping positions

When stopping behind a vehicle, leave enough space to see their tyres touching the road. Avoid stopping too close to junctions, driveways or bends where you’d cause a hazard.

EV tips: creep and regenerative braking

In an EV, the car may feel different when you lift off the accelerator because regenerative braking can slow you down more than expected. Learn the feel gradually and aim for smoothness.
