Driving Test Ready: How to Build Consistency, Confidence, and Good Habits

Passing your driving test is about safe, consistent driving — not being perfect. Most fails happen from a few avoidable mistakes under pressure.

What “test ready” really means

You should be able to drive with minimal prompts: junctions, roundabouts, meeting traffic, and manoeuvres. If you can do something only sometimes, it needs more practise.

Building independence (sat nav and signs)

Practice following signs and sat nav directions without relying on your instructor. Making your own decisions builds confidence fast.

Common faults to avoid

Late observations, weak blind spot checks, rushing junctions, wrong lanes at roundabouts, and reacting too late to hazards.

Sleep well, eat something light, arrive early, and drive one moment at a time. If you make a mistake, don’t panic — recover safely and move on.

It is an absolute privilege to share that George passed his driving test this afternoon in Lichfield, and he did it in style with only one single driving fault!

This wasn’t just any pass for me; it marks the official end of an era. George is officially the very last manual learner I will ever teach! As many of you know, my coaching has moved fully over to automatic vehicles, but I am so incredibly glad I stayed the course with George.

Here is how a bit of team effort, a lot of determination, and some solid cycling background brought home a near-perfect result.

A Deal Between Cycling Mates

Imagine you’re out on a Gravel cycle ride, pedalling up a steep hill, chatting about gear ratios, and your mate turns to you and asks if you’ll teach his lad to drive. That is exactly how this journey started.

George’s stepdad, Simon, is a good friend of mine through the cycling community. George is a keen cyclist himself, tearing it up on mountain bike trails and even racing on the track in the past.

When Simon asked me to take George on, I was already well into planning my transition to automatic EV lessons. We struck a deal: I’d start George off in a manual car, but once I made the official switch to automatic, Simon would take over the reins.

Swapping Saddle Time for Dual Controls

As layouts and timelines changed, the plan adapted. Instead of switching instructors, I ended up continuing George’s tuition using a couple of different cars. We did a chunk of lessons in Simon’s car, and eventually transitioned into his Nan’s car to get him fully familiar with the vehicle he’d be using long-term.

When we first buckled up, George had that classic “cyclist speed” mentality. Because track and mountain biking require rapid reactions, he was approaching busy junctions and roundabouts just a bit too quickly.

Through focused tuition, we worked on his processing time and approach speeds. He quickly learned to channel that natural spatial awareness into becoming a highly competent driver who shows genuine care and consideration for all road users—including his fellow cyclists!

That massive injection of real-world road knowledge, dealing with varying terrains and dual carriageways, gave him an incredible boost in confidence.

All that hard work culminated this afternoon when the examiner handed over that beautiful pass certificate with just a solitary minor mark on the sheet! Faster roads feel intimidating because everything happens quicker. But good driving is still the same skills: observation, planning, and calm control.

Joining using the slip road

Use the slip road to build speed to match traffic. Don’t join too slowly. Check mirrors, signal, and merge smoothly into a safe gap.

Following distance

Use at least a two-second gap in dry conditions and increase it in rain. This gives you time to react safely.

Lane discipline and overtaking

Keep left unless overtaking. Overtake decisively, then return left when safe. Avoid sitting alongside lorries.

EV acceleration: use it smoothly

EVs can accelerate quickly, which can help joining roads — just keep it controlled and predictable.

Manoeuvres aren’t about perfection — they’re about control, observation, and finishing safely.

Slow control is everything

Move at walking pace. In an automatic, control speed mainly with the brake. The slower you go, the more time you have to steer accurately.

Observations (what examiners want)

Check around you before moving off and regularly while reversing. If someone walks behind you, stop. Safety first.

Bay parking basics

Use reference points, watch both mirrors, and correct if needed. A safe correction is better than forcing a bad position.

Parallel parking basics

Aim to park close to the kerb without touching it. Use mirrors to judge distance and straighten up carefully.

Roundabouts Without Stress: Lanes, Signals, and Timing

Roundabouts feel busy because decisions happen quickly. The secret is lane choice, good observation, and calm timing.

Choosing the correct lane

Use signs and road markings first. As a general guide: left lane for left/straight ahead (often), right lane for right turns — but markings always win.

Give way and joining safely

In the UK you give way to traffic from the right. Approach at a speed where you can stop, but still join smoothly when a safe gap appears.

Signalling on roundabouts

Signal left for left, signal right for right, and usually no signal on approach for straight ahead. Signal left after the exit before yours to show you’re leaving.

Common roundabout mistakes

Late lane changes, weak observations, and hesitation. If it isn’t safe, wait. If it is safe, go decisively.

As of April 2026, we are seeing some of the sharpest weekly rises in petrol and diesel prices on record, with diesel recently surging past £1.81 per litre.

Many driving instructors across the UK are unfortunately being forced to raise their lesson rates just to cover these soaring overheads. However, because I teach exclusively in a fully electric vehicle (EV), I have a message for my current and future pupils: your lesson prices are staying exactly where they are.

Why EV Lessons Mean Stable Prices for You

The “fuel pinch” at the pumps is real, but it doesn’t have to stall your progress. Here is how learning in an electric car protects your budget during this energy crisis:

Immunity to Petrol Spikes: While petrol has exceeded 152p per litre and is climbing, the cost of charging an EV at home remains significantly lower per mile.
Lower Running Costs: Charging an electric car can cost as little as 2p to 7p per mile on off-peak tariffs, compared to roughly 15p per mile for a standard petrol car.

Junctions feel pressured because you’re combining skills: mirrors, speed, positioning, and timing. Use a simple system and they become predictable.

Approach routine (mirrors, position, speed, look)

Check mirrors, position early, reduce speed smoothly, then look and decide. Rushing causes mistakes.

Turning left safely

Avoid cutting the corner. Watch for pedestrians crossing the side road you’re turning into.

Turning right safely

Keep your wheels straight when waiting. Watch oncoming traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Emerging and choosing safe gaps

A safe gap is one where you can join without forcing someone else to brake or change direction. If visibility is restricted, creep forward carefully and be prepared to stop again.

A First-Time Pass in Lichfield: How Isla Smashed Her Driving Test

There is no better way to start a Tuesday than with a first-time driving test pass! Huge congratulations to Isla, who “smashed” her test this morning in Lichfield on her very first attempt.

Isla’s journey was a little different from most. She was already an excellent driver, but when her previous instructor faced some personal challenges, I was more than happy to step in and help her get across the finish line. It felt a privilege to work with someone who was already so test-ready; my role was simply to add the finishing touches to her already high standard of driving.

Passing a driving test on the first go is a massive achievement, and it is a testament to the hard work and effort Isla and Lynn her original Driving Instructor put into every lesson.
