With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East causing significant disruption to global oil supplies, UK learners are understandably worried about the cost of getting behind the wheel. As of April 2026, we are seeing some of the sharpest weekly rises in petrol and diesel prices on record, with diesel recently surging past £1.81 per litre.

Many driving instructors across the UK are unfortunately being forced to raise their lesson rates just to cover these soaring overheads. However, because I teach exclusively in a fully electric vehicle (EV), I have a message for my current and future pupils: your lesson prices are staying exactly where they are.

Why EV Lessons Mean Stable Prices for You

The “fuel pinch” at the pumps is real, but it doesn’t have to stall your progress. Here is how learning in an electric car protects your budget during this energy crisis:

Immunity to Petrol Spikes: While petrol has exceeded 152p per litre and is climbing, the cost of charging an EV at home remains significantly lower per mile.
Lower Running Costs: Charging an electric car can cost as little as 2p to 7p per mile on off-peak tariffs, compared to roughly 15p per mile for a standard petrol car.
No “Fuel Surcharges”: Many instructors in petrol or diesel cars are adding surcharges to cope with the 40-50% rise in oil-based products. Because I don’t use a single drop of fuel, I don’t need to pass those costs on to you.

Mastering Clutch Control and Hill Starts

Clutch control is one of the trickier skills for learner drivers to master, but it’s essential for smooth and safe driving in a manual car—especially when it comes to hill starts. With practice and the right techniques, you’ll be managing the clutch like a pro in no time.

The clutch allows you to smoothly engage and disengage the engine from the wheels. When learning to drive, your instructor will help you understand the clutch’s biting point—the moment when the car is just about to move. Getting a feel for this point is key to avoiding stalling and rolling back.

When moving off normally, you’ll press the clutch down fully, select first gear, gently press the accelerator, and slowly raise the clutch until you feel the biting point. Then, you gradually increase the accelerator while continuing to lift the clutch. This coordination takes practice, so don’t worry if it doesn’t come naturally right away.

Hill starts add another level of challenge. On an incline, it’s crucial to find the biting point before releasing the handbrake, so the car doesn’t roll backward. Your instructor will teach you how to use the handbrake effectively and time your movements to maintain control.

You might also practise hill starts with the accelerator method (for more power) or the handbrake method (for more control). In either case, maintaining calm focus and steady footwork is the goal.

With time, you’ll develop muscle memory, and clutch control will feel more intuitive. Don’t be disheartened by the odd stall—it’s all part of the learning process.

Roundabouts Made Simple

Roundabouts can seem intimidating to new drivers, but once you understand the rules and practice a bit, they’ll become second nature. They’re designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely—so mastering them is a key part of learning to drive in the UK.

The first step to tackling a roundabout is preparation. As you approach, look for signs and road markings that tell you which lane to be in based on your destination. If you’re turning left (usually the first exit), you’ll stay in the left lane. For going straight on (often the second exit), it’s usually the left or middle lane. For turning right (third exit or beyond), you’ll normally use the right-hand lane.

Observation is crucial. Check your mirrors, signal in good time, and adjust your speed to fit in with the flow of traffic. As you near the give-way line, look to your right to see if it’s safe to join. Traffic already on the roundabout has priority, so only go when there’s a suitable gap.

Once you’re on the roundabout, keep to your lane and follow it round until you’re approaching your exit. Don’t forget your signal! Signal left just after the exit before yours so other drivers know you’re leaving.

Your instructor will help you practice all kinds of roundabouts, from mini ones in residential areas to large multi-lane ones on busy roads. With guidance and repetition, you’ll soon learn to judge gaps in traffic, signal correctly, and stay calm under pressure.

Top tip: If you’re ever unsure, slow down and take your time. It’s always better to wait for a clear gap than to rush in.

Understanding Road Signs and Markings

Road signs and markings are the language of the road—and understanding them is essential for any learner driver. They provide crucial information to help keep you and others safe, guide you on where to go, and ensure smooth traffic flow.

Road signs come in different shapes and colours, each with its own meaning. Circular signs generally give orders: red circles prohibit, while blue circles often give positive instructions (like “turn left ahead”). Triangular signs warn of potential hazards such as sharp bends, pedestrian crossings, or slippery roads. Rectangular signs provide information, such as directions or details about bus lanes and parking.

Your instructor will begin to introduce common road signs early on—especially those relevant to where you’re driving. It’s a good idea to study the Highway Code alongside your lessons to familiarise yourself with less obvious signs like weight restrictions or minimum speed limits.

Road markings are just as important. White lines indicate lanes and road edges, and broken lines often mean “give way” or separation between traffic directions. You’ll also come across yellow lines on the side of the road, indicating parking restrictions. Zigzag lines near pedestrian crossings mean no stopping at any time.

One essential skill to build is anticipation. Learning to read road signs and markings in advance helps you make better decisions—like reducing speed ahead of a bend or preparing for a change in priority at a junction.

It might feel overwhelming at first, but with practice and guidance, interpreting road signs will soon become second nature. Every lesson gives you a new opportunity to sharpen your awareness.

The Importance of Good Observation Skills

One of the most vital skills a learner driver can develop is observation. Good observation is key to safe driving and making the right decisions on the road. It’s not just about seeing—it’s about being aware of your surroundings, interpreting what you see, and reacting appropriately.

From the moment you start your engine, observation comes into play. Before you move off, you’ll be taught to carry out a full 360-degree check—known as the ‘all-around check’—to make sure it’s safe. This includes checking your mirrors, blind spots, and looking out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.

Mirrors should become second nature. Your instructor will help you understand when and how to check them. Generally, you’ll check your interior mirror first, then the door mirror relevant to the direction you’re moving or turning. The key times to check your mirrors are: before changing speed, direction, or road position.

Blind spots are another critical area. These are the parts of the road you can’t see in your mirrors, especially over your shoulder. Always check them before moving off, merging, or changing lanes.

Good observation also includes anticipating what other road users might do. For example, a pedestrian near a crossing or a car approaching a junction may indicate a need to slow down or stop. Reading the road ahead gives you time to react safely and smoothly.

Practising these habits early will make you a safer and more confident driver. Don’t worry if it feels like a lot at first—your instructor will guide you step by step until it becomes natural.

Understanding the Cockpit Drill

Before you start driving, there’s an important safety procedure every learner needs to know: the cockpit drill. This is a series of checks and adjustments you do before starting the car to ensure you’re safe, comfortable, and in control. It’s one of the first things your instructor will teach you, and getting into the habit of doing it properly sets the tone for good driving habits.

The cockpit drill consists of the following steps, often remembered by the acronym DSSSM:

D – Doors: Make sure all the doors are securely closed. You might hear a click or see an indicator light on the dashboard if any are open.

S – Seat: Adjust your seat so that you can reach and depress the clutch pedal fully with a slight bend in your leg. Then adjust the seat height so you can see out of the windscreen properly. Your knees should be slightly bent when pressing the pedals.

S – Steering: Adjust the steering wheel (if it’s adjustable) so you can hold it comfortably at the 10 and 2 or 9 and 3 positions with a slight bend in your arms.

S – Seatbelt: Buckle up! Ensure your seatbelt lies flat across your chest and lap and isn’t twisted.

M – Mirrors: Adjust your interior mirror and both door mirrors to give you a clear view of the road behind and to the sides. Make sure you can see a small portion of your own car in the door mirrors for reference.

Completing the cockpit drill helps you feel more prepared and secure before you start driving. Over time, it becomes second nature and an essential part of every journey.

Manual vs. Automatic: Which is Right for You?

When learning to drive, one of the first decisions you’ll make is whether to learn in a manual or automatic car. Both options have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your preferences, needs, and driving goals.

Manual cars have a clutch pedal and require you to change gears yourself. Learning in a manual gives you more control over the car and can be better for certain types of driving, like in hilly or rural areas. Once you pass your test in a manual, you’re legally allowed to drive both manual and automatic vehicles.

On the other hand, automatic cars are easier to drive because the car changes gears for you. This can make driving less stressful, especially in heavy traffic or urban areas. If you’re particularly anxious about learning to drive or have coordination challenges, an automatic may be a good option.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you pass your test in an automatic, you’re only licensed to drive automatic cars. To drive a manual, you’d need to retake your test in a manual vehicle.

Cost can also be a factor. Lessons in automatic cars are often slightly more expensive, and automatics tend to cost more to buy or maintain. However, electric vehicles are usually automatic, so if you’re thinking of going electric in the future, this might influence your choice.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to what feels right for you. If you’re unsure, you can even try one or two lessons in both to see which you prefer. Your instructor can help guide you based on your comfort and ability.

Top Tips for Nervous Learners

Feeling nervous before or during your driving lessons is completely normal. In fact, many learners feel anxious, especially in the beginning. The good news is that there are lots of ways to manage those nerves so you can get the most out of each lesson.

First and foremost, communicate with your instructor. A good instructor understands that everyone learns at their own pace and will be patient and encouraging. Let them know how you’re feeling—they can adapt the lesson to help you feel more comfortable.

Breathing techniques can also work wonders. If you find yourself getting flustered, take a moment to breathe deeply and slowly. This helps calm your mind and regain focus.

Preparation is key. Before your lesson, try to get a good night’s sleep and eat something light. Avoid caffeine if it tends to make you jittery. Arriving early can also help you feel settled before getting behind the wheel.

It’s also helpful to set small goals. Rather than thinking about passing the driving test, focus on improving one skill at a time—like mastering clutch control or understanding road signs. Celebrate your progress, however small.

Another tip is to visualise success. Picture yourself driving smoothly, changing gears confidently, or parking perfectly. This mental rehearsal can boost your confidence.

And finally, be kind to yourself. Everyone learns differently, and making mistakes is part of the process. What matters is that you’re learning from them.

With each lesson, your confidence will grow. Stay positive, trust your instructor, and believe in your ability to become a safe and skilled driver.

Getting Started: What to Expect from Your First Driving Lesson

Your first driving lesson can be a mix of excitement and nerves, but knowing what to expect can help ease those butterflies. Think about your driving instructor as a coach. Your role is to discover how to drive safely and within the rules of the Highway Code, while your driving instructors role is to guide you to discover the things you may not know yet. Together your driving journey will begin.

Most lessons begin with a short chat where your instructor will introduce themselves and check your provisional licence. They’ll explain how the lesson will run and may ask about any previous driving experience you have.

The instructor will then guide you through the basics of the vehicle’s controls: clutch, brake, accelerator, gears, mirrors, and indicators. Don’t worry—you won’t be expected to remember everything straight away. You’ll likely start in a quiet area, such as a residential street, industrial estateor car park, to get familiar with moving off and stopping safely.

In this first hour, your instructor will tailor the pace to your confidence level. You might get as far as changing gears or even trying a turn or two. Throughout the lesson, the instructor will talk you through each step, offering gentle encouragement and feedback. It’s okay to make mistakes—everyone does! That’s all part of learning.

At the end of the lesson, they’ll discuss how it went, give feedback, and talk about what you’ll cover next time. They may also help you book your next few lessons.

Top tip: Wear comfy shoes and clothes, bring your licence, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you’re not flustered.
