There is nothing quite like the feeling of hearing the words “I’m pleased to tell you that you’ve passed.” This morning in Stafford, Sadie experienced that exact moment after 43 hours of dedicated practice over 25 lessons.

Sadie has been an absolute pleasure to teach. From our very first session, she applied herself fully, showing the kind of commitment that makes the journey from learner to licence-holder so rewarding. It’s completely normal for the theory and practical tests to feel like huge hurdles, but with a solid plan, you can tackle them with confidence. Here is a quick guide to help you stay on track.

1. Conquer the Theory First

Think of the theory test as the foundation for your practical driving. In 2026, the DVSA has introduced new life-saving questions regarding CPR and defibrillators, so make sure your revision materials are up to date!

Example: Don’t just memorise signs; understand why they are there. For the new first aid questions, knowing that the correct depth for chest compressions is 5 to 6 centimetres can be the difference between a pass and a fail.

2. Practical Prep & Booking Rules

The way we manage tests has changed this year. As of Spring 2026, learners are now responsible for booking their own practical tests independently. You are also limited to only two changes per booking, so it’s vital to only book when we both agree you are truly ready.

Example: If you’re struggling with parallel parking, we’ll spend extra time on it during lessons rather than rushing to a test date. It’s better to move the test once than to lose the fee by failing or exceeding your change limit.

3. The “Ready to Pass” Mindset

The best way to beat test-day nerves is to be over-prepared. We’ll use mock tests to simulate the real exam environment, including the 20-minute independent driving section and following sat-nav directions, which now features in about 80% of tests.

Example: During a mock test, I’ll stay silent just like an examiner would. This helps you get used to making your own decisions at roundabouts and junctions without needing a prompt from me.

Mirrors, Signals, and Blind Spots: The Observation Skills That Save Lives

Observation is what keeps you safe. Many collisions happen because a driver didn’t check mirrors, missed a cyclist, or assumed a blind spot was clear.

MSM: Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre

Before you change speed or direction: check mirrors, signal if it benefits others, then complete the manoeuvre safely. This keeps your driving predictable and reduces surprises.

When to check mirrors

Check mirrors before slowing down, stopping, turning, changing lanes, overtaking, passing parked cars, or approaching hazards. Quick glances are enough — don’t stare.

Blind spot checks (shoulder checks)

Mirrors don’t show everything. Before moving off, pulling out around parked cars, or changing lanes, you may need a quick shoulder check. This is especially important for cyclists and motorbikes.

Clear signalling

Signal to help others, not just because you “have to.” Signal early enough to be useful, but not so early it confuses people.

Good observation makes driving calmer because you feel more in control.

Steering and Road Position: Staying Safe Without Drifting

Steering looks easy when experienced drivers do it, but learners often drift, over-steer, or clip kerbs because they’re tense or looking too close.

Hand position and smooth steering

A comfortable hand position is around “9 and 3” on the wheel. Keep your grip light. Smooth steering comes from calm hands and the right speed. If you’re turning the wheel quickly, you’re usually going too fast.

Look further ahead

Where your eyes go, the car tends to follow. If you stare at the kerb, you’ll drift to it. Look further down the road and your steering will naturally become steadier.

Clearance from parked cars

Give a safe clearance when passing parked vehicles — ideally about a door’s width where possible. Watch for doors opening and pedestrians stepping out.

Bends and corner safety

Slow down before the bend, steer smoothly through, and accelerate gently on the exit if safe. Don’t cut corners — stay fully in your lane.

Steering and positioning improve quickly once you relax and look ahead.

There is no better feeling than seeing a learner’s hard work and persistence culminate in a result like this. This week, Megan achieved the ultimate goal: passing her driving test with zero driver faults.

Megan’s journey is a fantastic example of how staying the course—even when the road gets a bit bumpy—leads to incredible success.

A Journey of Adaptability and Grit

Megan started her lessons with me back in September in a manual car. Like many learners, she had a few “wobbles” early on as she got to grips with the complexities of gears and the clutch. However, she stuck with it and her confidence grew steadily.

When I made the transition to a automatic car, Megan showed great adaptability. While she began practicing in her mum’s car to keep up her manual skills, she continued regular lessons with me in the automatic. This “two-pillar” approach—professional instruction combined with private practice—is often the secret to becoming a truly well-rounded driver.

In early January, Megan took her first test in a manual car. Unfortunately, it wasn’t her day, resulting in a few driver faults and one serious fault.

Moving Off and Stopping Smoothly: The First Real Driving Skill

Moving off and stopping sounds simple, but it’s one of the most important foundations in driving. If you can’t move off safely, you can’t join traffic. If you can’t stop smoothly, junctions and queues become stressful.

The safe move-off routine

Moving off is about control and observation. In an automatic, select Drive, keep your foot on the brake, and prepare to move using gentle pressure. Then check mirrors and do the right blind-spot check before you move away (your instructor will show you when).

If it helps other road users, signal. Then move away smoothly — no rushing.

Stopping smoothly (without jerky braking)

Smooth stops come from looking ahead and braking early. Use gentle pressure first, then ease off slightly at the end so the car settles. Think “soft landing,” not “slam on.”

Safe distance and stopping positions

When stopping behind a vehicle, leave enough space to see their tyres touching the road. Avoid stopping too close to junctions, driveways or bends where you’d cause a hazard.

EV tips: creep and regenerative braking

In an EV, the car may feel different when you lift off the accelerator because regenerative braking can slow you down more than expected. Learn the feel gradually and aim for smoothness.

Master moving off and stopping and everything else becomes easier.

Oleksii’s Story: Building a Life, One Milestone at a Time

Oleksii arrived in the UK having to overcome:

Forced displacement due to war – leaving Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion
A complete language barrier – arriving with no English
No family in the UK – starting again entirely on his own

When Oleksii arrived in the UK from Ukraine at the very start of the Russian invasion, he arrived with no English, no family here, and no idea what the future would hold.

What he did have was determination.

Putting Down Roots

Since arriving in the UK, Oleksii has steadily built a new life from the ground up. He has settled into life in the UK, found full-time work in Stafford, and continued to develop his English — each step bringing more confidence and independence.

These milestones may seem ordinary on the surface, but when you consider where Oleksii started, they represent huge personal achievements.

Learning to Drive — and Adapting Along the Way

Learning to drive became another important step towards independence.

Oleksii originally started his driving lessons with me in a manual car. During his learning journey, I made the transition to teaching in an automatic vehicle over the New Year. While that could have been a setback, it turned into another example of people stepping up to help.

I was able to find Oleksii a new instructor, and this is where Green Light Driving School truly came to the rescue.
Arleta stepped in, ensured continuity in Oleksii’s learning, and helped him progress with confidence.

That teamwork paid off — Oleksii passed his driving test on Thursday, a moment that marked far more than just gaining a licence. A big thank you to Arleta for stepping in and getting Oleksii his licence.

A huge congratulations to Ellie, who just passed her driving test at the Lichfield test centre! Her journey is the perfect example of how choosing the right car and instructor can change everything.

Protecting Her Health with Automatic Lessons

Ellie came to me because a persistent knee injury made manual driving a painful struggle. With a corrective operation scheduled for later this month, using a clutch was no longer an option.

We switched her to Automatic/EV lessons in Rugeley to remove that physical strain. By taking the “gears” out of the equation, Ellie was able to protect her knee and focus entirely on the road – proving that physical limitations don’t have to stop your independence.

From 13 Faults to a Calm Pass

Practising Parking: Tips for Bay and Parallel Parking

Parking can be a nerve-wracking part of driving for many learners, but it doesn’t have to be. With clear instruction and regular practice, parking becomes just another skill to master. Two of the most commonly tested manoeuvres are bay parking and parallel parking.

Bay Parking: This involves reversing into or driving forward into a designated parking bay, typically found in car parks. When reversing in, line up your car with the bay lines using reference points (like your mirrors or window alignment) to guide you. Move slowly and adjust your steering gradually to stay centered in the space. Your instructor will help you refine your technique until it feels second nature.

Driving forward into a bay is usually easier but requires reversing out later, which can be more difficult in a tight space. Always check your surroundings and use your mirrors to ensure it’s safe.

Parallel Parking: This manoeuvre can seem daunting at first but breaks down into simple, repeatable steps. It involves reversing into a space between two cars by aligning your vehicle, steering at the correct angle, and making minor adjustments to stay close to the curb without hitting it.

Key tips include staying calm, using your mirrors effectively, and moving at a controlled, slow pace. If you don’t get it perfect the first time, that’s okay—just readjust and try again. Confidence grows with practice.

Your instructor will guide you through both types of parking in quiet spots before gradually introducing real-world scenarios. The more you practise, the easier and more natural it will feel.

The Cockpit Drill: Setting Up for Safe, Confident Driving

One of the biggest confidence boosters for a new learner is getting the driving position right. If your seat is too far back you’ll stretch for the pedals and lose control. If your mirrors are wrong you’ll miss hazards. The cockpit drill fixes that. It’s a simple routine you do before driving, and it sets you up for calm, safe control.

Seat position

Slide the seat so you can press the brake fully without locking your knee straight. You want a slight bend in your leg. This gives you better control and braking power. Adjust the seat height so you can see clearly over the steering wheel and out of the windscreen.

Steering wheel and backrest

Set the backrest so you’re upright and relaxed. You shouldn’t be leaning forward. If your steering wheel adjusts, bring it to you so your arms are slightly bent when holding it. Bent arms = smoother steering and less tension.

Head restraint

The head restraint should be roughly level with the back of your head, not your neck. It’s there for whiplash protection.

Mirrors (and why they matter)

Set the interior mirror to frame the rear window. Door mirrors should show a small slice of your car and the road behind. Mirrors aren’t just for changing lanes — you should use them before slowing down, stopping, turning, or avoiding hazards.
