You’ll start with the basics, in a quiet area, and build up step by step.

A good first lesson is about comfort and safety. It’s where you learn what the controls do, how to sit correctly, and how to move the car smoothly. If you’re learning in an automatic (especially an EV), you may find the first lesson easier because you can focus on steering, braking, and observation without changing gears.

What you’ll do first

Most first lessons begin with a quick chat. Your instructor will ask about your previous experience, what you’re nervous about, and what you want to achieve. Then you’ll cover the essentials: adjusting your seat, steering wheel, head restraint and mirrors. This setup matters because it helps you steer smoothly, see clearly, and stay in control.

What you’ll learn in lesson one

You’ll be introduced to the main controls: indicators, wipers, lights, demisters, and how to select Drive and Reverse in an automatic. In an electric car you’ll also learn what “ready to drive” looks like, because EVs are quiet and it’s easy to assume the car is off when it isn’t.

After that, you’ll normally practise moving off and stopping a few times. The goal is to feel how the car responds to gentle acceleration and smooth braking.

Dealing with Busy Traffic and Rush Hour Driving

Driving in busy traffic can be one of the more challenging aspects of learning to drive—but it’s also one of the most valuable skills you’ll develop. With patience, practice, and guidance from your instructor, you’ll learn to stay calm and in control, even during the busiest times of day.

Rush hour usually brings stop-start traffic, impatient drivers, and frequent lane changes. The key is to stay alert and anticipate what’s happening around you. Your instructor will help you develop these observation skills, encouraging you to check mirrors regularly and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

In heavy traffic, smooth and steady control is essential. You’ll practise clutch control and low-speed manoeuvring so that you can move with the flow without stalling or jerking forward. You’ll also learn how to use the handbrake effectively when needed, such as on hills or during long pauses.

Planning ahead becomes especially important in rush hour. Look well ahead, scan for brake lights, and be ready to react gradually rather than suddenly. You’ll also practise reading the road for signs, markings, and traffic lights to stay one step ahead.

One common mistake is trying to rush. It’s better to take your time and wait for a safe gap than to feel pressured by other drivers. Your instructor will support you in building confidence and making sound decisions, even in a busy environment.

Remember, every driver had to learn this at some point—and with each experience, you’ll become more confident. Busy traffic won’t feel so stressful once you’ve had some structured, guided practice.
